Edisto Island Outdoor Ecology Classes
Edisto is the perfect outdoor classroom for cross-curriculum learning.
Science and History come alive here and we can provide you with an immersion learning experience.
Join us with your class or for continuing education. Below are some examples ofsingle classes we offer, but ask about our day-long learning adventures.
Our Programs Correlate With The State Science Standards and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Fields Of Study.
Sea Turtle Science: Dive into the fascinating life history of the loggerhead sea turtle with a sea turtle biologist. After an introduction to sea turtle biology and conservation, students will become the biologists as they learn how to "read" a turtle crawl to locate the eggs for protection from predators. For an in-class experience, students will use a dichotomous key to perform species identification. Program time 90 minutes. $15 per person.
Barrier Island Adventure: Explore the components of a barrier island by foot or boat. Visit the salt marsh, maritime forest and front beach to compare and contrast these systems and the animals and plants that make these areas their home. Program time 90 minutes. $15 per person walking program, $25 per person boat program.
South Carolina Natural and Cultural History: Visit a site of the earliest human inhabitants along the South Carolina sea islands. Students will learn about the connections between the cultural and natural history of the region. Program time 90 minutes. $15 per person walking program, $25 per person boat program.
Mollusk Madness: If you think seashells are boring, you haven't visited the beach with us! Our scavenger hunt and hands-on programming will introduce you to the kill or be killed lives of the beautiful shells that are along our coast. The program includes a squid dissection. Program time 2 hours. $20 per person.
